Limited Submission Opportunities

Some funding agencies restrict the number of proposals an institution may submit for a given opportunity. These are known as Limited Submission Opportunities (LSOs). UMKC coordinates an internal process to ensure that interested faculty and research staff have an equitable chance to compete for these opportunities while maintaining institutional compliance with sponsor requirements.

IDENTIFYING LIMITED SUBMISSION OPPORTUNITIES

  • Monitoring Funding Announcements

    • UMKC Research Administration regularly scans federal agency bulletins, foundation notices, and sponsor websites for LSOs.

    • Opportunities are posted on the UMKC ORI website and shared through email announcements to relevant colleges, schools, and departments.

  • Faculty and Staff Notifications

    • Interested faculty and departmental research staff receive alerts about new LSOs, including eligibility criteria and deadlines.

    • Announcements specify whether an internal competition will be held.

EXPRESSING INTEREST

Faculty and staff who wish to pursue an LSO must submit a brief Notice of Intent (NOI) to UMKC Research Administration by the stated deadline.
The NOI typically includes:

  • PI name and department

  • Project title or area of focus

  • Brief project summary (1–2 paragraphs)

  • Confirmation of eligibility per sponsor guidelines

INTERNAL REVIEW & SELECTION PROCESS

When more Notices of Intent are received than UMKC is allowed to submit:

  • Internal Call for Proposals is issued requesting short internal proposals or pre-proposals.

  • Proposals are reviewed by a faculty committee or internal review panel.

  • Selection is based on alignment with sponsor priorities, competitiveness, and institutional goals.

The selected PI(s) will receive official notification and proceed with full proposal development with support from UMKC's Sponsored Projects unit.

DEADLINES & TIMELY RESPONSE

Faculty are strongly encouraged to submit Notices of Intent as early as possible to allow adequate time for internal review and proposal preparation. Missing internal deadlines may disqualify a proposal from consideration, even if the sponsor deadline has not yet passed.
