2025-2026 Funding For Excellence (FFE) Program
The University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) is a leading R1 designated research institution and a key member of the regional life sciences consortium. With a strong commitment to advancing scientific discovery and innovation, UMKC continues to expand its research enterprise through the development of cutting-edge laboratories, the recruitment of exceptional faculty, and the establishment of disease-focused Centers of Excellence. Central to these efforts is the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (ORI), which serves as a foundational component of the university’s research infrastructure. ORI is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the scholarly, scientific, and creative activities of UMKC’s faculty and staff across all disciplines.
The Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) supports UMKC’s mission by advancing excellence in research, scholarship, and innovation. We coordinate resources, policies, and infrastructure so faculty, staff, and students can pursue rigorous, ethical, and impactful work.
Research Administration
Oversees all stages of externally funded projects, from proposal development to award close-out through our Sponsored Projects unit. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies including human subjects, animal research, conflict of interest, grant financials, and reporting requirements via our Research Compliance unit.
Technology Transfer & Commercialization
Helps transform UMKC research and inventions into real-world applications. We assist in patenting, licensing, industry partnerships, startup formation, and protecting intellectual property so ideas have impact beyond the lab.
Laboratory Animal Research Core (LARC)
Provides veterinary and technical support, oversight, and training for any research using animals. Ensures compliance with animal welfare standards and promotes best practices, high-quality research, and responsible stewardship.
Research Security
Protects both physical and informational assets relevant to UMKC research. Monitors export controls, dual-use research, security of sensitive data, and ensures adherence to national security and institutional policies to safeguard UMKC research integrity.
Data Science & Analytics Innovation Center (dSAIC)
The NextGen dSAIC, led by UMKC in partnership with the University of Missouri system, supports high‑performance computing, data storage and analysis, and workforce development in data science and analytics. It enables large‑scale data‑driven research that addresses societal challenges across health, business, agriculture, digital humanities, and more.
Institute for Human Development (IHD)
An applied research and training center focused on human services, disability, and inclusion. As Missouri’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), the Institute for Human Development (IHD) bridges UMKC and community partners to promote social change via research, education, training, and community programs. It addresses needs across the lifespan and emphasizes equity, quality of life, and participation for underserved populations.
