The Research Compliance Office and Institutional Review Board are responsible for oversight of all research activities involving human subjects.
Expedited does not mean the review is less rigorous or happens more quickly than convened review. It refers to certain types of research considered to involve minimal risk.
Research activities in which the only involvement of human subjects will be in one or more of the exempt categories defined by federal regulations will be given an exempt determination rather than an IRB approval. Exempt studies are so named because they are exempt from some of the federal regulations.
