Technology Transfer Overall Process

1. Receive invention disclosure information from faculty and staff.
2. Evaluate inventions for patentability and market potential.
3. Secure intellectual property protection in patents, copyrights and trademarks.
4. Identify and contact companies that have the expertise and resources necessary to bring an invention to market.
5. Negotiate licenses and other intellectual property agreements with companies interested in further developing UMKC intellectual property.
6. Manage reporting and compliance obligations for federal, state and industry research contracts.
7. Receive and distribute royalty money to inventors, departments and the university.
8. Encourage reinvestment in research and disclosure of intellectual property.
9. Provide educational training and resources on prior art assessment and technology transfer.
